Background of the Study
Diabetes mellitus, particularly type 2 diabetes, has become a major global health concern due to its increasing prevalence and associated complications. In many parts of Africa, including Nigeria, the rapid transition from traditional diets to more Westernized eating patterns has been linked to a rise in diabetes cases. Traditional diets, which often consist of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and minimally processed foods, have been found to play a significant role in diabetes prevention due to their low glycemic index and high fiber content (Adegboye et al., 2024). In Taraba State, a region rich in diverse cultural and traditional food practices, there is potential to explore how indigenous diets contribute to diabetes prevention. Studies have shown that traditional Nigerian foods such as millet, sorghum, beans, and leafy vegetables contain essential nutrients and bioactive compounds that help regulate blood glucose levels (Ogunmola & Alabi, 2023). Despite the potential health benefits of these traditional foods, dietary transitions driven by urbanization, globalization, and economic changes have led to increased consumption of processed foods and refined sugars, which are linked to higher diabetes risk. This study aims to investigate the role of traditional diets in diabetes prevention in Taraba State, examining the dietary patterns of the population and their impact on diabetes risk factors.
Statement of the Problem
The increasing prevalence of diabetes in Nigeria has raised concerns about dietary patterns and lifestyle choices contributing to the epidemic. While several studies have highlighted the relationship between diet and diabetes risk, there is limited research specifically focusing on the role of traditional diets in diabetes prevention in Taraba State. The decline in traditional food consumption, coupled with the rise in processed food intake, may be contributing to higher incidences of diabetes, but this relationship remains underexplored. Additionally, there is a need to assess whether the population is aware of the potential benefits of traditional diets in managing blood sugar levels and preventing diabetes. Without sufficient research on this topic, public health initiatives in Taraba State may fail to leverage traditional dietary practices as a preventive strategy against diabetes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on adult populations in both rural and urban areas of Taraba State, examining their dietary habits and diabetes risk factors. The study will collect data through dietary assessments, interviews, and nutritional analyses of traditional foods. Limitations include potential self-reporting biases and the challenge of isolating dietary factors from other diabetes risk contributors such as genetics and physical activity.
